STANDARDISATION OF S-METER READINGS

At the IARU Region I Conference in Miskolc-Tapolca (1978) the following recommendation was adopted:

IARU Region I adopts as a provisional standard the value of 6 dB for the "S-point", and this value will be recommended to manufacturers of equipment.

At the meeting of the IARU Region 1 VHF/UHF/SHF Committee in Düsseldorf (April 1989) the following recommendation was adopted, and later approved by the IARU Region 1 Executive Committee:

The S9 reference level for frequency bands above 144 MHz is -93 dBm available signal power at the receiver input.

Note : The reason for a 20 dB lower level above 144 MHz in comparison with the S9 level below 144 MHz is the fact that the average antenna noise-temperature is lower and that very often convertors with gain are used together with a HF receiver with a -73 dBm S9 level (extract from the conference proposal by VERON).
